Abstract
An expression for the energy transfer is derived for the classical one-dimensional collision of an atom with an excited harmonic oscillator with an exponential interaction. The formula does not predict independence of the average energy transfer with respect to initial oscillator excitation and approaches the correct limiting expression for high energies. Comparison is made with exact numerical results and with an existing formula.
