Abstract

The project "The Great Auto-da-Fé in Santiago de los Caballeros" consisted of an interactive virtual recreation of this historic event that took place on March 11, 1554, in the city now known as Antigua, Guatemala. A binational research team from Mexico and the United States, comprised of researchers and students in history, architecture, and animation engineering, created the historical sets, characters, and interactivity necessary to offer the public this immersive experience over the course of five weeks. Meanwhile, the research collective Praeteritas Urbes, in collaboration with the INAH (Museo Palacio Cantón), aims to reconstruct a historic event from the colonial period in the Mayan region: the Auto-da-Fé of Maní in 1562. This collective created the virtual reconstruction of the former convent of San Miguel Arcángel, the virtual recreation of the historical figures, and a physical and virtual museum exhibition.
